Cariad Knight - Lights, Camera, Myelin: Can 31P ssNMR Take Center Stage in the Quest for Quantitative MRI of Membrane Morphology?

Abstract: Improved sensitivity to myelin membrane changes can be achieved with phosphorous (31P) solid-state NMR (ssNMR) by cross polarization (CP) with hydrogen (1H). Experiments on pig neural tissues show that 1H/31P CP signals are highly sensitive to variations in abundance and orientation of myelin membranes. And by a two-step magnetization transfer process, we establish the potential of 1H/31P CP as a quantitative MRI metric uniquely poised to detect subtle changes in myelin membrane morphology.
