What Is a Lathe Dog (Carrier)?
A lathe dog, or lathe carrier, is a mechanical accessory—typically made from cast iron, steel, or aluminum—that transfers rotational motion from a lathe's spindle (via a faceplate or drive stud) to a workpiece held between centers.

Types of Lathe Dogs
1. Straight Tail Lathe Dogs
Features a straight arm that engages a drive pin or faceplate.
Avoid off-center interference, but require a separate drive stud to be mounted on the faceplate
2. Bent Tail Lathe Dogs
Have an angled or offset tail that can engage directly with a faceplate slot or chuck jaw.
Handy for compact setup, but may push the workpiece off-center if clearance is limited.
3. Clamp (Adjustable) Lathe Dogs
Equipped with a movable portion secured by cap screws, ideal for gripping square, rectangular, or oddly shaped parts securely
