A bumper crowd of 843 was on hand at the Butchers Arms to witness a tense and tight affair in the NWCFL Play-off Semi final between Droylsden and Holker Old Boys.
With the visiting team having the upper hand of the league fixtures between the two teams this season, the Bloods had up their game if they wanted to make the Play-off final.
Indeed, the game was as nervy as you would expect from a semi final clash between two teams with very little between them in regards to the final standings. Droylsden had the better of the possession, but it was Holker who drew first blood in the 36th minute, when a corner from their left hand side was met with a diving header by full back Joe Amison, to give the away team the lead going into the half time break.
The second half was identical to the first, with the Bloods having the better of the possession, and finally made the most of it just after the hour mark, when a corner from Droylsden's right hand side was met with a towering header by Owen Whitehead, which Holker keeper Matthew Bailey could only spill the ball out to the awaiting Harry Shipton to smash in the equaliser.
Chances for both teams came and went in the final 15 minutes, but neither team to add to their tally, as the full time whistle blew, and somehow predictably, penalties were the only way that the two teams would be separated.
The home team got off to the perfect start, as Killer made no mistake from the spot, and Holker substitute Jamie Hodgson's effort hit the post. Both teams second penalties were both scored, with Blood's Captain Liam Moran and Holker's Will McGladdery both finding the back of the net. Droylsden furthered their advantage in the third round of spot kicks, as goal scorer Harry Shipton found the Goalkeeper's bottom right corner, followed up by Jordan Latham fantastically saving Holker's Tyler wood's penalty. With a chance to send the home team to the final, Harry Forshaw's penalty was expertly saved by Bailey in the Holker net. Holker's 4th penalty went to their goal scorer Joe Amison, who could only blaze the ball over the bar, and send the Bloods into the Play-off final, as the fans ran onto the pitch the celebrate with the team.
With Euxton Villa beating Nelson 10-9 on penalties in the other Semi final, it means Droylsden will have home advantage in the Play-off final on the 29th April, due to the two teams finishing positions in the final league table.
