George Bennard, the composer of "The Old Rugged Cross", grew up in Iowa. He and his wife became brigade leaders in the Salvation Army and then George became a Methodist evangelist. He received ridicule for his beliefs and that was when he composed the first verse to this hymn in Albion, Michigan, in the fall of 1912. He finished it in January of 1913. Charles Gabriel, a well-known gospel song composer, helped Bennard with the harmonies. The completed version was performed in Pokagon, Michigan in June, 1913, accompanied by guitar.
