The Doomsday Device is a theoretical nuclear dead man's switch which will detonate a country's entire nuclear arsenal if it detects a nuclear detonation from an adversary power. Though it was popularised by the film Dr. Strangelove directed by Stanley Kubrick, the idea was posed originally by Leo Szilard in a 1950 radio program, and later in greater detail in writing by Herman Kahn in 1960. This video examines the theoretical foundations of the Doomsday Device, its links to the theory of mutually assured destruction and its practical implementation in the Soviet Union's 'Perimeter' or 'Dead Hand' system.
