Tetralogy of Fallot is a congenital heart defect characterized by 4 defects viz; ventricular septal defect, pulmonic stenosis, overriding aorta and right ventricular hypertrophy.
The risk factors for tetralogy of fallot include the genetic factors, fetal and maternal infections, teratogenic drugs, maternal alcohol intake, exposure to radiation.
The signs and symptoms of tetralogy of fallot are cyanosis, tet spells and squatting position.
Diagnosis is based on clinical history taking, physical examination, electrocardiogram, chest x ray and cardiac catheterization.
The medical management is directed toward prevention of cyanotic spells which includes giving the patient chest knee position, providing supplemental oxygen and medications.
Surgical management includes Blalock Taussig Shunt, Waterson Shunt, Potts Procedure and Surgical Closure of VSD.
Complications of Tetralogy of Fallot are arrhythmias and postoperative infective endocarditis.
