Bonobos (Pan paniscus) and Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) are the closest living relatives of humans.
Compared to chimpanzees, bonobo society is considered to be peaceful. They have never been observed to kill each other, both within groups and between groups. Moreover, bonobos of different groups often interact with each other amicably (Furuichi 2011).
On a day in August last year, I was following the bonobos of the E1 group, which was the largest group among the four identified groups in Wamba. Then, the E1 group encountered PE and PW groups, and females of three groups gathered on a huge fallen tree. There were more than 50 individuals around the fallen tree!
Females interacted socially (and sexually) with each other for about an hour, but adult males could not approach to the gathering of females (only an adolescent male could join the gathering).
It seems that such a tolerant and amicable female relationship is the key to a peaceful society in bonobos.
