The mid point of my Baltic journey, St Petersburg, Russia. Situated at the end of a bay on a group of islands looking West towards the Gulf of Finland. We work our way through the surrounding apartment blocks towards the historical centre. Then a trip to the resplendent Peterhof Palace, one of Peter the Greats many palaces. Finally a trip to Kronstadt, the scene of the famous sailors revolt of early Soviet history but also technological marvel. The national sea level by which Yuri Gagarins space flight was measured from is concealed under a bridge in the naval area in the form of a plaque. Nearby is an 18th century sea gauge "hut" used to monitor the regular flooding and tide changes near St Petersburg.
