LOOWIT LOOP-Mount St. Helens. The Loowit Loop Trail circumambulates Mount St. Helens & takes you on an adventure with spectacular views, changing landscape to navigate, from forests to boulder fields to deep gullies left by the 1980 eruption. The trail is exposed & has very few water sources. This challenging trail was perfect backpacking trip for my summer of training for the Wonderland Trail.
The Loowit Loop Trail itself is just under 30 miles with approximately 6,500 ft of elevation gain. When planning your trip you will need to choose which trailhead to start at, there are multiple options, which will add mileage & elevation gain to your hike.
The Loowit Loop Trail was built after the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. Trail planning began after Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument was established in 1982. The full loop was completed in 1991.
