George Rego sensei (5th dan) provides an abbreviated demonstration of a fundamental ground escape from the mount or Tate Shiho Gatame—using the shrimping motion, or ebi. Variations on the ebi motion ("shrimping") is used in a multitude of diverse groundwork situations. In escaping from the bottom of a mount position the bridging and ebi movements work hand-in-hand to facilitate an escape.
The mount is one of the most dominant positions in grappling and self-defense. Escaping it requires timing, leverage, and efficient movement—not strength. The ebi (shrimp) movement allows one to create space, reorient one's body, and recover to a safer position.
🔑 Key Points Covered:
– Using the shrimp (ebi) motion to escape from Tate Shiho Gatame (mount)
– How to generate space and angle your hips correctly
– Common mistakes to avoid during the escape
– Application of the movement in a self-defense context
Mastering this escape builds a strong foundation for ground survival and reversal tactics.
