How to Be a More Persuasive Communicator

The world continues to change at an unprecedented pace. Now more than ever, I believe soft skills are the new hard skills, and persuasive communication is critical for leaders at every level. So, how can you become a more compelling communicator?

No matter your role or function, I have three keys to help you become a more influential and persuasive communicator.

First, prepare for impact. Yes, it is ironic as it’s the title of my video series, but the concept is important. The most effective communicators practice and prepare positions of value in advance to ensure they are ready to be compelling.

Second, ask effective open-ended questions. As Dr. Stephen Covey said, “Seek first to understand, then to be understood.” Questions should be prepared in advance to be effective. Persuasive communication can then be managed by asking intelligent open-ended questions.

Lastly, expect resistance. If you are competing for resources, trying to navigate change or disrupting the status quo, you’re likely to encounter some resistance. Prepare for it. Expect it. Welcome it. Often, resistance indicates a sign of additional interest.

Start implementing these ideas today and prepare to be a more persuasive communicator.
