The typical call of an Eastern Whip-poor-will, recorded at Big Oaks national Wildlife Refuge in southern Indiana.
Although it is easy to determine whether one of these birds is present, due to their distinctive and often constant calling sounds (after which they are named), their camouflage coloration, elusive nature, and tendency to call at night makes viewing them difficult. While many local populations are threatened by habitat loss, the species as a whole is not at risk.
Fun fact: the particular bird I recorded camped outside the building I was staying in, and one of my coworkers on the opposite side was pestered by the bird every night at the exact same time each night for two months straight while she was trying to sleep.
