The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has arrested four alleged operatives of the banned United Tani Army (UTA) for issuing extortion notices across Arunachal Pradesh.
According to police officials, four incidents of extortion were reported recently — two in Itanagar, one in Pasighat, and another in Basar. While the SIT registered a case in the state capital, a separate case was filed at the Basar police station.
The accused have been identified as Biri Ruja (38), arrested from Banderdewa on September 14 and Hungsa Pansa (33), Tana Badang (46) and Marli Ingo (48), who were picked up from Itanagar the following day.
SIT superintendent of police Shivendu Bhushan revealed that the crackdown was triggered after a Nirjuli resident received a WhatsApp message on September 7 demanding ₹5 crore.
“Our probe led to Ruja’s arrest, and we found evidence linking the extortion to UTA’s self-styled chief, Anthony Doke,” Bhushan said, adding that the group had undergone training in Myanmar.
Inspector General of Police (Law & Order) Chuku Apa confirmed that Doke and some associates are believed to be hiding across the border. “With these arrests, the UTA network has been severely dented,” Apa said.
Urging the public not to panic, Apa called upon the public to immediately report any extortion messages to the police immediately.
“We will investigate the matter thoroughly,” he assured.
