The white smoke billowing from the P-38's left engine nacelle told Master Sergeant Frank Rodriguez everything he needed to know. Another coolant boil-over. Another engine cooked to the edge of seizure. Another pilot lucky to be alive.
Rodriguez stood beside the pierced steel planking runway at Fighter Two, watching Captain James McLanahan taxi his Lightning toward the hardstand. Even from fifty yards away, Rodriguez could see heat shimmer rising from both Allison engines. The temperature gauges in that cockpit had to be pegged past two hundred sixty degrees Fahrenheit. Combat power for ninety minutes over Bougainville. The engines weren't designed for it.
McLanahan cut the engines and climbed down, his flight suit soaked through with sweat. Not from the tropical heat. From fear. The kind of fear that comes from flying four hundred miles over open ocean knowing your engines might quit at any moment.
