Here are the rules for IUPAC naming of amines:
Rule 1: Identify the parent compound
The parent compound is the longest continuous chain containing the nitrogen atom.
The suffix "-amine" is used to indicate the amine group.
Rule 2: Number the parent chain
Number the parent chain to give the lowest possible number to the nitrogen atom.
The nitrogen atom is usually assigned the number 1.
Rule 3: Name the substituents
Alkyl groups attached to the nitrogen atom are named as substituents.
The prefix "N-" is used to indicate the substituent is attached to the nitrogen atom.
Rule 4: Assemble the IUPAC name
Combine the substituent names with the parent compound name.
Examples:
1. CH3NH2
Parent: Methane
Suffix: -amine
IUPAC: Methanamine
Common: Methylamine
2. C2H5NH2
Parent: Ethane
Suffix: -amine
IUPAC: Ethanamine
