When people talk about Border Wars—the intensity, the atmosphere, the multi-state draw, the tradition—they’re talking about more than a wrestling tournament. They’re talking about the legacy of Chris Pickren, a man whose vision and heart helped transform South Walton into a wrestling destination.
Chris didn’t just help build Border Wars.
He imagined it before it existed.
At a time when Panhandle wrestling was overlooked, Chris saw an opportunity:
bring in elite competition, keep local programs at home, and create an event that would elevate the entire region. What started as an ambitious idea became a signature tournament known across the Southeast.
But Chris’s impact went far beyond the mats.
🏫 He strengthened South Walton High School’s wrestling culture.
👨👩👦 He created a community event that brought families, alumni, and neighbors together.
🍽️ He supported local businesses by filling hotels and restaurants with visiting teams.
💬 He made connections that put South Walton on the wrestling map.
Even after his sons graduated, Chris and his family kept showing up—working tables, coordinating teams, supporting coaches, and pouring themselves into the event. That devotion is why the tournament now proudly carries his name:
The Chris Pickren Memorial: Border Wars
This isn’t just a tribute.
It’s a reminder that one person’s determination can elevate an entire community.
South Walton wrestling is stronger because of him.
Border Wars exists because of him.
And every wrestler who steps on those mats—boys or girls, JV or varsity, from Florida or five states away—is standing inside the legacy Chris built.
His vision continues.
His impact continues.
And Border Wars XIII is proof that Chris Pickren’s influence is still shaping the future of wrestling in the Panhandle.
