Felix Mendelssohn’s Songs without Words (Lieder ohne Worte) represent one of the most poetic and intimate piano cycles of the Romantic era.Written between 1829 and 1845, these 48 short piano pieces are grouped into eight books and explore a wide expressive range, from lyrical cantabile writing to delicate character pieces and virtuoso miniatures.
Conceived as “songs” without sung text, these works rely entirely on the piano’s singing ability, clarity of texture, and subtle harmonic language. Mendelssohn combines classical balance with Romantic lyricism, creating music that is at once refined, personal, and deeply expressive.
The interpretations presented in this complete video were originally recorded and published on this channel in eight separate videos, each dedicated to one opus of the Songs without Words.This unified presentation brings together the entire cycle, offering a continuous listening experience that highlights both the individuality of each miniature and the structural coherence of the whole collection.
