This work consists of 4 variations on the song "Onder een linde groen" or "Under der Linden grune". If we translate it literally: "Under the green lime tree". One of Sweelincks music characteristics is his beautiful variation technique. There is an anecdote of a friend of Sweelinck who was together with Sweelinck and some other friends and Sweelinck played at his harpsichord till midnight and he played (improvised?) 25 (!) variations on the song "Den lustelicken Meij". It is the variation technique where Sweelinck was very good at.
