Alberta is now Canada's fourth largest province in both size (about twice that of Germany) and population (roughly 5 million).
The province was carved out of the Northwest Territories which was the fusion of Rupert's Land (Hudson Bay Company), Kewatin Land and the North-West Territory. This was all indigenous land - home to many distinct cultures which are here today. The regions were effectively governed by by private, empire-sanctioned fur-trading companies.
Much of the wealth of Montreal can from these lands.
Trains arrived to what is now Alberta (and Saskatchewan) in the 1880's and settlers were encouraged.
in 1898 Yukon was formed as a distinct Territory as a result of the Klondike Gold Rush. Alberta and Saskatchewan were carved out of NWT in 1905 and Edmonton was chosen as Alberta's Capital.
The early population was somewhere between 160-250 thousand people.
