Perhaps the most frequent question we hear is, “How do I learn to study the Bible in context on my own?” That’s why we wrote a free e-book called The #1 Mistake Most Everyone Makes Reading the Bible (available for FREE at https://walkingthetext.com/join/) and why we’re doing this series.
In Episode 149, Lenses of Context—Literary, the final installment of our series, Walking The Text founder Brad Gray examines the brilliant and highly-intentional literary context of the Bible. Literary context can be broken down into four sections: genre, design, what we call “the W’s,” and placement.
It turns out, there are 8 genres in the Bible, and that’s hugely important. We don’t read a legal document the same way we read a letter or a historical account. Knowing the genre gives us clues about how to read it. The design of a book can also reveal a lot about its meaning. For example, Matthew writes to a Jewish audience to show them that Jesus is the second Moses. A careful examination of the design of Matthew’s Gospel reveals a particular structure, loaded with hints about Jesus and Moses.
But there’s more. Knowing the who, what, when, where, and why of a Text will enhance your understanding, and we’ll show you two great Study Bibles that do just that. Additionally, Brad will examine a technique for grasping the significance of a passage’s placement in the overall Bible. By the end of Episode 149, Lenses of Context—Literary, you’ll have resources, questions, and techniques to help you read the Bible with greater confidence and competence!
