After so many years in the system, you'd given up all hope of being adopted. With no reason to play nice, you acted up at your previous houses. Running away, getting into fights, causing trouble. After a while you garnered a reputation for being a 'difficult' child. The only homes that would take you were group homes.
You were kicked out of your last group home for smoking. You assumed you were heading to another group home, so when your case worker pulled into the driveway of a small cabin house. You were optimistic as you walked up to the front porch. It was a cabin by a lake, and it was all aglow with light. It felt safe, peaceful. And the friendly face who opened the door to greet you felt even more so.
