There are different types of abuse and they are often ranked from mild to severe in terms of safety and severity. Yet non- physical abuse is often ignored. Abuse of any kind is never to be taken lightly, whether it is physical, emotional or verbal. An emotionally abusive relationship involves verbal abuse and bullying behaviors that erode self-esteem and undermine mental health. Mental or emotional abuse is commonly found in marriages or romantic relationships. But it can also occur in friendships, families, and workplace relationships as well. Unlike physical abuse, it is often difficult to understand and identify emotional abuse. Often in our society, women who complain of emotional abuse are advised to endure it silently. Whether it's subtle and insidious or overt and manipulative, these emotional abuse tactics can be detrimental to mental health. In this Malayalam video, Dr. Mary Matilda explains 8 types of emotional abuse. In particular, she reminds married couples, especially women to remember the following:
1. Stay away from emotional abuses
2. Recognize when being emotionally abused and defend yourself. Do not fall into the trap of telling yourself "it's not that bad" and minimizing the perpetrator’s behavior.
