Born and raised in Detroit, singer/songwriter Eddie Floyd joined Stax in 1965, and became one of the label's most prolific artists, penning hits for the likes of Carla Thomas, Sam & Dave and Otis Redding. In 1966, Floyd scored a major hit with "Knock on Wood," which he co-wrote with Booker T. & The M.G.'s guitarist/Stax producer Steve Cropper. The single peaked at number 1 on the Billboard Soul Singles chart and number 28 on the Hot 100 chart.
Released in 1971, Down To Earth is Floyd's seventh studio album. Recorded in Memphis, it was co-produced with Steve Cropper, and was a stylistic departure from his previous albums. Down To Earth is a gritty soul-rock album, featuring covers and original tracks alike, including the Civil Rights anthem "People Get Ready," a cover of the jazz standard "I Only Have Eyes For You," and a Floyd-Cropper original "Changing Love."
