Jalba my 3-year-old Dingo started resource guarding his food after a few small scraps with his brother.
After placing his food down he would growl at us and the hair on his back would stand up when we approached.
We 1st got Jalba as a 6-month-old wild-born Dingo.
He had been attacked by another animal out in the wild and his tail was badly damaged.
It had become infected. This in turn made him quite sick and eventually, he couldn't keep up with his pack.
He was found by some travellers severely emaciated, dehydrated and unable to walk on the side of a road. They picked him up, took him to a vet who amputated his tail, and then he came to us to be looked after.
From day 1 he would growl at us around food. You can just imagine this was something his whole pack would have done around meal time so he didn't know any better.
Not wanting him to continue down this path I started hand-feeding him.
At first, he wanted nothing to do with it and he wouldn't come near me.
Eventually his hunger got the better of him and came and took the food from my hand. Within minutes he understood that this was just going to be the way it was now when he ate and so he continued.
I repeated the process for days on end until I was comfortable to put the food in his bowl on the ground with my hand in it and he would just eat around my fingers.
Everything was fine for the next 2 years until recently when Rusty and Jalba had a scrap over a treat then Jalba started resource guarding around us again so I went back to the beginning and for the last 4 days I have been hand-feeding him again to show him we are still the good guys haha.
You can see in this video he has already responded quite well and wasn't phased by my presence.
