Taiwan Semiconductor manufacturing & US
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has sent a strong warning to the US government, cautioning that proposed tariffs on Taiwanese semiconductors could undermine its $165 billion investment plans in Arizona, reports Focus Taiwan.
In a letter to the US Department of Commerce, TSMC stated that these tariffs would raise consumer costs, reduce demand for semiconductor-based products, and create economic uncertainty around current tech investments—including its Arizona megaproject.
Currently, TSMC has invested $65 billion in three cutting-edge chip fabrication plants in Phoenix. The first is already operational, the second is nearing completion, and ground has just been broken on the third. The company also plans to invest $100 billion more to build three more fabs, R&D centers, and packaging units in the coming years.
TSMC urged that tariffs “should not create uncertainties for existing semiconductor investments”, highlighting how they could derail America’s own chip ambitions.
With chip demand soaring and TSMC’s revenue rising in April 2025, the stakes are higher than ever. Whether the U.S. listens—or levies—could shape the future of tech.
