Coriolanus, a hero of Rome, saw his patriotism turn into hatred after being exiled for despising the plebeians. Seeking revenge, he joined Rome’s enemies, the Volsci, and marched against his own homeland, sweeping away Rome’s defenses. At the city gates, he ignored official pleas but yielded to his mother and wife, who appealed to family honor. By withdrawing and sparing the city, he betrayed his new allies. Without a homeland and without forgiveness, he was executed by the Volsci. Coriolanus died a victim of pride so great that it made him choose his ego over his own life.
