In this video, I'm recording guitar parts for the song "Grass Is Greener". Jason Francis-Foreman is a student at the Australian Institute of Music. He emailed me and wanted to be involved. We met up beforehand to get an idea about the parts I wanted him to play before we went in to the studio.
In my normal way of miking guitars I use a number of mics; generally 4-5 mics. Some of these are dynamics, some are condensers, some are valve microphones. On this session I used a Neumann U87, a Beyer M88 and a Shure SM57. All of these were miked close to the amplifier - a Blackstar head and I think just a Behringer Quad box. I also placed a 4th microphone - a Neumann KM183 in the room - about 2 metres away. This acted as a talk mic for Jason as well as a room mike for the guitar. I also placed it quite close to his strumming so I could get a bit of the plectrum sound. All of these mics are fed to 1 track of Pro Tools (or Logic) or which DAW you are using.
The reason for this many microphones is this - you can blend 1,2,3 or all 4 microphones together to get the sound you are after. This usually negates the need for EQ. It also allows you to quickly experiment with different sounds, and it also allows you to quickly change sounds - say when double tracking or getting a new guitar part.
