The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) is an athletic association that is comprised of eight Metro Manila universities, namely Adamson University (AdU), Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), De La Salle University (DLSU), Far Eastern University (FEU), National University (NU), University of the East (UE), University of the Philippines Diliman (UP), and the University of Santo Tomas (UST).
The association was established on 27 September 1938, when the University of the Philippines Alumni Association and the Philippine Amateur Athletic Federation (PAAF), then the highest sports body in the country, encouraged the "Big 3" universities (NU, UP and UST) alongside FEU to form a permanent sports association. The UAAP's first meet included six sports such as basketball, baseball, football, women's volleyball, swimming and athletics.
UP played as hosts to the 62nd season of the UAAP from 1999 to 2000, and it had the theme "Bigyang Katuparan, 'Sang Kalikasan" ("Give fulfillment to nature"). This athletic year kicked off on 10 July 1999 with an opening ceremony held at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
Notably in basketball, La Salle had achieved dominance in both tournaments. While the DLSU Lady Archers won the first of their four women's championships from 1999 to 2002, the Green Archers retained their men's championship from Season 61, claiming their fourth UAAP basketball crown after reeling back from a Game 1 loss and then forcing a do-or-die third game, where they would win 78-75 over UST in overtime for the title.
