Q: So are there any advantages of having a larger turbo? Part 6!
Short answer- Absolutely!
In the past few shorts we've been discussing examples of why smaller turbos (specifically K16s and K24s) will limit you due to the size of the compressor wheel and consequently airflow ceiling. But don't worry! We have some upgrade solutions to this issue without needing to switch out your turbos. 👀
K24s will hold 1.1 to 1.2 Bar boost by redline sometimes, depending if you've got a bigger engine like a 3.8 or big intakes that's making the engine flow a lot more air- the turbo's still limited so it just falls off. So what we do on those is we just upgrade the compressors. The turbine wheel is adequate, the turbine housing is adequate, compressor housing is adequate; so we have the wheels machined we put larger wheels in and machine the housings.
For instance a K16, we used to do K16/16Gs which would put a 35lb compressor wheel on it which gave us a net 700 at the crank or around 630 at the tires. Now we do a K16/65G2 compressor that is a little bit more than that and we've seen 630 to 650 at the wheels which is really impressive on a little K16. 💪
