In today’s conversation, Dr. Abhishek Shukla and Dr. Resham Srivastava, Radiation Oncologist from Medanta and MD from SGPGI, Lucknow, discussed the important role of palliative and end-of-life care for patients with advanced or terminal cancers. They spoke about how the goal at this stage is no longer cure, but comfort, to ease pain, reduce symptoms, and enhance the quality of life for both patients and their families. Dr. Abhishek emphasized that compassionate care, psychological support, and dignity in dying are essential parts of this phase of treatment.
Dr. Resham explained the concept of palliative radiation therapy, which uses controlled doses of radiation to relieve distressing symptoms caused by cancer, such as pain, bleeding, or obstruction. Unlike curative therapy, which aims to eradicate the disease, palliative radiation focuses on symptom control and comfort. It can significantly improve quality of life even in advanced stages of cancer. This approach is particularly beneficial for cancers that tend to spread to bones or other organs, where localized radiation can provide rapid pain relief and functional improvement.
She further highlighted that palliative radiation is commonly used in conditions like multiple myeloma, metastatic breast cancer, and prostate cancer, where bone pain or compression of vital structures can cause immense suffering. By using modern techniques, doctors can precisely target affected areas, minimize side effects, and achieve effective symptom relief in a short duration. Both doctors agreed that integrating palliative radiation with holistic care, including pain management, counseling, and family support, can help patients experience comfort, dignity, and peace during the final stages of life.
