57 Minutes of Trains at Sunshine Station; Metro, V/Line & Heritage Trains! Melbourne Transport [4K]

In this video we visit Sunshine, a major interchange station in Melbourne's western suburbs. It serves as a junction where the V/Line Ballarat and Geelong lines split from Metro's Sunbury Line. We visit the station on three separate occasions.

Firstly we visit the station in April 2023 where we see Metro Sunbury Line trains arriving and departing the station. We mostly see Comeng trains but a few Siemens trains also make an appearance. We also see Steamrail's K153 (masquerading as K100) and K190 which were operating Wizardry Express Charter shuttle trips between Flinders Street and Sunshine.

We don't see any V/Line trains on this particular day as there was trackwork being undertaken; mainly for grade spearation works at Deer Park and platform extension works at Sunshine.

To capture some V/Line trains I revisited the station in September 2025. This time we mostly see V/Line Vlocities on the Ballarat and Geelong Lines. V/Line trains on the Bendigo Line pass through Sunshine but don't stop.

I returned a month later in October 2025 to film some additional trains as there were a couple of heritage trains passing through Sunshine on this particular morning. This included DERMPAV's DERM 58RM which was heading to Wyndham Vale as part of the Geelong Sidings Tour. This was 58RM's first mainline trip in two years. Some time later we see Steamrail's R711 and V/Line's N453 heading towards Wycheproof for an overnight trip. We also see the XPT and V/Line's N460 hauling the morning loco-hauled train to Swan Hill which was running a hour behind schedule.

Sunshine station opened on the 7th September 1885 as Braybrook Junction as the location where the line towards Ballarat split from the line towards Bendigo. The station and the suburb was renamed Sunshine in 1907 after the Sunshine Harvester Works which was built adjacent to the station. Built by industrialist H. V. McKay, the factory produced the Sunshine Harvester which was the first successful combine harvester in Australia. At its height the factory employed up to 1,500 people and was the largest factory in the Southern Hemisphere.

The station has undergone numerous expansions over the years. One of the most significant upgrade was completed in 2014 as part of the construction of the Regional Rail Link project, which saw the station expanded to four platforms with a new overhead concourse featuring stairs, lifts and ramps, extra platform shelters, and a new bus interchange.

The station is about to undergo a second major upgrade as part of the Sunshine Superhub project to prepare the station for the future Melbourne Airport Railway Line and other network expansions. This project will include;

Expanding the station from four to six platforms.
Constructing a new footbridge on the south side.
Platform extensions to accommodate longer trains.
Reconfiguring the tracks around the station, including constructing new flyovers for
the airport line and other railway bridges.
Quadruplicating the line to Deer Park to accommodate future electrification to Melton.
Rebuilding nearby Albion station.

Works on the Superhub project will begin in 2026 and are set to be completed by 2030.
