Opening on December 26, 1913, this architectural marvel featured a soaring waiting room that left visitors breathless, with sunlight streaming through towering windows onto marble floors beneath an ornate vaulted ceiling.

The station's 18-story office tower dominated Detroit's western skyline, while its grand halls welcomed presidents like Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Harry Truman.

At its peak in the 1940s, the station processed over 4,000 passengers daily, its elegant restaurant ranking among Detroit's finest dining establishments.

Designed by the same architectural firms behind New York's Grand Central Terminal - Warren and Wetmore and Reed & Stem - the station required 20,000 cubic yards of concrete and 7,000 tons of structural steel.

But as automobiles and air travel rose to prominence, rail travel declined, leading to the station's closure in 1988 after 74 years of continuous service.

For thirty years, Detroit's most magnificent building stood empty, its deteriorating grandeur becoming a powerful symbol of urban decay.

Yet in June 2018, an unexpected savior emerged: Ford Motor Company purchased the station, committing $1 billion to transform it into a mobility innovation campus.

The restoration required sourcing 600 tons of limestone from the original 1913 quarry to maintain architectural authenticity.

In early June 2024, the public witnessed the restored interior for the first time, marking a triumphant rebirth for both the station and Detroit itself.

The revitalized landmark now houses Ford's innovation teams, working to revolutionize transportation for future generations.
