The Garden Route is a region of South Africa in the Western Cape that is well known for its coastal forests and beautiful scenery, scattered with mountain passes and "padstals" - road side shops. It's a tourist route that attracts millions from all over the world...but there's another "Garden Route"...one off the beaten track track and away from the busy national roads......one with miles of open farmland, untouched forests and pristine gravel roads, country roads that take you into the real heart of the Garden Route.....a few local bike races are held annually but never linking all the bits together.....this is the story of a ride that took me deep into sparsely inhabited region to see what I could see......

This is Day 2, the KAMMANASSIE ROAD...this stretches from Dysseldorp for about 100km alongside the Kammanassie Mountain which is an inselberg in the Little Karoo between the Swartberg and Outeniqua mountains...a fertile valley with the Kammanassie River supporting a rich fruit and nut farming industry...farmers are in the middle of their worst drought in 100 years and are surviving from underground springs that supply water to the crops in the valley....a green belt in an arid landscape...
