We built the coop and barn, then upgraded them to level 2, which unlocked more animals. We now have chickens, peacocks, ducks, quails, cows, pigs, sheep and a goat! To be able to purchase animals, you have to raise your town rank, so donate what you can to the Museum/Temple and keep cleaning the ocean to get that rank up.
