Difference between Pureline Selection and Mass Selection | By Pratibha Sharma

Plant breeding is the process of improving plants by selecting for desirable traits. There are many different methods of plant breeding, but two of the most common are pureline selection and mass selection.

Pureline selection: In pureline selection, individual plants with the desired traits are selected and propagated. This is done over multiple generations until a pure line of plants is produced. A pure line is a group of plants that are all genetically identical.

Mass selection: In mass selection, plants with the desired traits are selected from a population of plants. The selected plants are then allowed to self-pollinate and produce the next generation. This process is repeated over multiple generations, and the population of plants gradually becomes more improved.
