I’ve never thought of myself as the kind of guy who scares easily. I work in logistics — routines, checklists, predictability. I like things that make sense. Maybe that’s why my friend Mark trusted me to house-sit for him while he was overseas.
Now, to call Mark eccentric would be putting it mildly. He’s one of those tech millionaires who made it big early and then disappeared into his own paranoia.
Everything in that house was automated. Fingerprint scanners, motion-sensitive lights, voice-activated systems, biometric locks… even the temperature changed depending on which room you walked into.
Mark was flying to Japan for two weeks. He left me a binder full of instructions — I’m not exaggerating — pages and pages of notes. “Cycle the air in the west wing at exactly 7 AM.” “Re-register the basement lock every forty-eight hours.” “If the exterior light goes out, call me first. Not the police.”
