Every year the 13th of December, the Scandinavian countries celebrates Saint Lucia with spectacular processions: girls wearing white gowns and carrying candles sing to praise the Christian martyr. The picturesque procession is a symbol of light in the darkness and carries pagan elements from the Northern midwinter rituals, 'yule.' The 'Lucia bride' wears candles on her head as well, symbolising how St Lucia places the lights on her head to have both hands free to feed the poor.
