The Feast of Sukkot is one of the most joyful and colorful holidays in the Jewish calendar. Also called the Feast of Tabernacles, it commemorates the journey of the Israelites through the desert after the Exodus from Egypt, when they lived in temporary shelters, or sukkot, under God’s protection. It is a time of faith, gratitude, and happiness, celebrating the connection between people, nature, and the Creator.
During Sukkot, Jerusalem fills with life and song, and nowhere is the joy more powerful than at the Western Wall, the last remaining part of the Second Temple. The Wall, a sacred symbol of faith and endurance, becomes a place of music, prayer, and spiritual celebration. People from all over Israel and from around the world come to rejoice before God, fulfilling the biblical commandment to be joyful during the festival.
At the Wall, men and women celebrate in separate areas according to Jewish tradition. On each side, there is heartfelt singing and dancing. Men dance together with energy and joy, many holding the Four Species: the lulav (palm branch), etrog (citron), hadassim (myrtle branches), and aravot (willow branches). Women also sing and dance in their section, expressing their faith and happiness in their own way. The sound of thousands of voices rises as one, turning the entire plaza into a living celebration of unity and devotion.
For the Jewish people, the Western Wall during Sukkot is not only a place of prayer but also a reminder of the Temple and the divine presence that once filled it. The Wall stands as a link between past and present, a witness to the unbroken spirit of the nation. Every song and every dance at the Wall expresses gratitude for survival, renewal, and hope for redemption.
The sukkah itself teaches humility. It reminds everyone that human life is fragile and temporary, and that true security comes from trusting in God. Yet Sukkot is not a sad reminder of weakness; it is a joyful celebration of divine care. The happiness of the holiday shows that faith is alive not only in prayer but also in the joy of being part of God’s creation.
At the Western Wall, this message comes to life. The prayers, the dancing, and the waving of the lulavim fill the air with holiness and joy. The open sky above the Wall becomes like the roof of a great sukkah, covering all who come with peace and blessing.
Sukkot at the Western Wall is therefore more than a festival. It is a living experience of faith, unity, and divine presence. It reminds every visitor that the same God who guided Israel in the wilderness still shelters His people today, and that true happiness is found in gratitude, faith, and togetherness.
