Ah, ladies and gentlemen, I don't know if you realize it, but tonight you´re in for a special treat:
Sixty Years after the Doors showed their uniqueness to the world passed by - today we´re going to break through the Keyboard-Sounds in order through the six Album Studio-recordings which i tried to capture & recreate with my Ray´s & Robby´s autographed original Instruments like the 1968 Gibson G-101, 1967 Vox Continental, 1972 silver sparkle top cover Fender Rhodes Piano Bass driven by some original amplification like the mega-rare Jordan "theBOSS" Amplifier / speaker next to the Acoustic Control Corporation 360 head Bass pre Amp or Fender tube Amps :-)
In addition to that i made use of my 1982 Fender Rhodes E-Piano (Mark II) e.g. on Riders on the Storm 57:17, my tweaked Hammond T-200 attached to an external rotary cabinet e.g. Hyacinth House 55:17 next to an 1915 German "Römhildt" Upright Piano on e.g. Yes, the River Knows 23:05 which has a slight de-tune at all.
For the Harpsi-chord on "Love me two times" or Strings / brasses on "Touch me" & "Tell all the People" i made use of the new late 2023 Yamaha Genos 2 Workstation by its nice samples arranged sound set on e.g. Soft Parade 36:23
I used the Vox Organ (V301E) on the rare Jordan "the BOSS" Amp which sounds very nice mellow to clear within its build-in amazing spring reverb unit. e.g. Spanish Caravan 20:50
When using the Gibson G101 on the Fender Twin Reverb Amp i made use of either a bright setting linke on e.g. Hello, i love you 13:43 or some more Gain like on e.g. When the Music´s over live 01:11:47 enhancing the sound by some more distortion which you notice especially on the live recordings of the doors too. On the other hand the G101 can sound very clear and soft a/o mellow when listening to e.g. "Hello I love you/Wintertime love" or "Summers almost gone" (which i think was recorded originally on the VOX...)
Using the Rhodes ePiano Mark II of the early 80s on the Fender Showman-Amp it sounds little different to the Rhodes Mark I used on the Studio-Recordings by Ray to my ears. e.g. on Riders on the Storm 57:17 i made use of my recording by holding a laptop out of the window on a real storm/thunder passing by :-)... The Vibrato effect is very compareable to the original setting :-) Crawling King Snake 56:10 has been recorded by a Wurlitzer A200 which i do not own by now - so i choosed a more undistorted setting by adding a slight vibrato next to the spring reverb effect to it.
For the Rhodes Piano Bass there´s not much to say about it. Its awesome. Destroying everything in the room :-) here´s the famous effect of the preAMP tuning fork: 18:42
When sounding clear, deep and nice in the room it doesnt sound necessarily same way on the recording as it all depends much on the mics in use and settings applied on the amp and later on when mixing.
In any case i tried to capture the instruments best as possible to me in that quick session performed - i got the idea for the video just right 1 day before the 4th of January
Important remark:
I tried to find some balance between "original notes & chord progressions" and kind of "free improvisation" as this is the way i´m as self-taught amateur (mostly) keyboard - player. The aim was & is not to perform a copy of each note being played by Ray - than i suggest you to listen to the original recordings where you can observe the one and only Master existing: Ray himself!
I´m generally just fully improvising and play like i feel (the doors) music in that one moment. Always different. So the link to the Studio-Recordings doesnt show really the act of improvisation. Thats why i did put some 10 more Song-excerpts as encore tracks which are based on those many amazing bootlegs / live-recordings out there where the doors do (fully) improvise, as usually, too...
Recorded without metronome-click & any tricks at all; no fake - pure and real fade-away of sound ;-)
The signings 1:24:48 at the end of the video happend right away in a Hotelroom where Robby & Ray started their 2004 European Tour under the naming of "Doors of the 21st Century" in Brüssels/Belgium, Europe.
Ultimate thanks to all being met that day - especially to Andreas Krisam who made this entirely happen!
So, nothing more left to say let´s all celebrate the 60th anniversary of the doors´s existance, music, lyrics & vibe given to us - always positively remembering!
Keep the spirit alive!
Peace, love & rock on.
Enjoy! :-)
Thank you.
