When I travel I usually rent a car, but I generally never bother reviewing them, being efficient and contemporary vehicles for moving from point to point, but it's a good occasion to sample the automotive present, considering I'm firmly in the automotive past, by tastes and choice.
This is not a professional review, it's just my personal opinion as a car enthusiast and as a driver with 31 years of experience, both in everyday and long distance driving.
I've not reviewed my previous rental cars, but the current ranking, based on performance, driving pleasure and economy is (the cars were all relatively new so first registered in the year of rental, or the year before):
1st place Toyota Yaris automatic (both hybrid and petrol): Romania 2022 and 2023
2nd place Hyundai Y10 automatic: Malta 2023 and 2025
3d place Kia Picanto automatic: Malta 2024
4th place Volkswagen Polo automatic: Romania 2024
5th place Opel Mokka automatic: Romania 2025
