These eight repentance verses from the Avataṃsaka Sutra (Huáyán Jīng) have been recited by countless Buddhist practitioners through generations. Many are deeply moved while chanting them—often moved to tears—showing the profound power of these verses and their ability to touch the deepest layers of the heart.
The Essence of the Verses
The verse states:
“Whatever wrongs arise from my body, speech, and mind—today I repent them all.”*
From this moment onward, before the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, our parents, and teachers, we sincerely repent and vow to purify all wrongdoings created in the past.
Repentance as Purifying Water
身体若染尘,可以以水洗净;
Repentance is like pure water—
When the body is dirty, water can cleanse it.
When the mind is stained by ignorance and karmic burdens, the “water of repentance” can purify it.
Thus, repentance is not self-blame; it is healing, cleansing, and renewal.
Why Repentance Matters
*愿意忏悔的人,才有机会觉醒;
No human is without faults.
This verse teaches us:
**Only those who repent can awaken;
Only those who take responsibility can transform.**
All growth begins from the willingness to change.
#The True Meaning of “Chan” (Confession) and “Hui” (Remorse)
Confession
Chan means confessing past faults.
All wrongs committed in the past—
ignorance, confusion, arrogance, jealousy, deceit, and all harmful actions—
are sincerely acknowledged and repented, with a vow never to let them arise again.
This is “Chan” (Confession).
Remorse
Hui means remorse for future faults.
From this moment onward, one stays awake and vigilant,
vowing never again to commit acts of ignorance, jealousy, arrogance, or deceit.
This is “Hui” (Remorse).
The Power of Repentance
Repentance is not shame—
it is the doorway to awakening and liberation.
It means:
Cleansing the past (Chan)
Preventing future wrongs (Hui)
Purifying the present (Insight)
Beginning a new chapter of life
True repentance softens the heart, dissolves karmic burdens, awakens wisdom, and restores clarity to life.
