In this insightful talk, Professor Beri Jigmay Wangyal explains the deep spiritual, historical, and cultural significance of the Nechung Oracle and Nechung Monastery, the traditional seat of Tibet’s State Oracle.
Nechung refers to both the sacred monastery and the oracle itself—an emanation of the powerful protector deity Pehar, who communicates through a chosen monk known as the Kuten. For centuries, the Nechung Oracle has served as a spiritual advisor and protector of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government, offering guidance on important religious and state matters.
Originally located near Drepung Monastery in Lhasa, Nechung Monastery was destroyed following the 1959 Chinese invasion of Tibet. However, its sacred traditions continue today in exile—most notably in Dharamshala, India, within the Tsuglagkhang Complex, and also at Nechung Dorje Drayang Ling Monastery in Hawaii.
This talk highlights how Nechung remains a vital link to Tibetan spiritual heritage, governance, and cultural continuity, especially for Tibetans living in exile.
