From above Central Park, the heart of Manhattan opens as a long green rectangle framed by the densest city in America.
The park stretches from 59th to 110th Street and from Fifth Avenue to Central Park West, covering more than 840 acres of meadows, lakes, rock outcrops, and winding wooded paths.
It sits in a natural valley shaped by ancient glacial movement, with Manhattan schist pushing through the soil in places like Umpire Rock and Summit Rock.
Before the park existed, this land was not empty.
It contained a patchwork of farms, settlements, and a free Black community known as Seneca Village.
Hundreds of residents lived here with churches, schools, and gardens until the city cleared the area through eminent domain in the 1850s to build a monumental public park for a growing metropolis.
Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux designed the landscape to feel natural even though every curve, pond, and pathway was planned.
Today Central Park is one of the most recognized urban landmarks in the world.
From the Great Lawn to Bethesda Terrace and from the Reservoir to the Ramble, it anchors Manhattan’s skyline while offering quiet spaces, broad views, and cultural landmarks like the Met, the Belvedere Castle, and Strawberry Fields.
On Google Earth the park reads as a deep green canyon surrounded by towers, a place where New York City breathes and where the past and present can be seen side by side.
