This is the first test drive of this Yaesu FTDX101MP. It has the stock SSM-75G microphone with it, as well as the correct power supply/external speaker combo.
As a long-time "Icom guy", I had to retrain my thought processes a bit to adapt to the way Yaesu thinks, but it was well worth the time. It also helps to read over the user manual (found online) before firing it up.
The QSO with a SOTA (Summits On The Air) station in New Jersey was maybe the best. Station was QRP, running 10 watts into a "piece of wire" as he put it, and he came in just fine. That's roughly 1,100 miles away, and the Yaesu did a great job of bringing him in clearly and pretty strong for 10 watts.
The Spanish station got my call sign wrong, but I didn't correct him on it. The important thing was he could hear me okay, and I could hear him. I dod chnage the phonetic of my call sign from the usual Alpha Golf 5 November Delta to a phonetic Europeans seem to recognize more easily, and that it Alpha Germany 5 Norway Delta. He was struggling to undertand the phonetic "golf", which is not surprising, since he is a native Spanish speaker and my call sign is flavored with a Mississippi accent.
This will be for sale on FatCat.Parts in the next few days.
