At the Academy, the endurance trial of venom was always one of the most feared. Alien cadets lined up to prove their species’ resilience: one injected a measured dose of neurotoxin and held through spasms until his breathing steadied again. Another dripped acidic ichor across his arm, clenching his jaw as it hissed against his skin. The class applauded each display of suffering, strength, and recovery.
Then the human stepped forward. Calm, curious, almost casual. The instructor handed him a vial with the standard trial dose. He rolled it between his fingers, glanced at the line of trembling cadets before him, and asked with complete seriousness:
“Can I get a stronger dose?”
The hall fell silent.
At first, they thought it was a joke. But when the human leaned forward, still waiting, the laughter died. The instructor hesitated, unsure whether to deny or obey. To the cadets, venom was terror and agony. To the human, it seemed barely interesting—something he was ready to push further, just to see what would happen.
Whispers spread immediately: “If that wasn’t enough for him… what is?”
