Assam-Meghalaya border dispute: CM calls for patience & cooperation

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has appealed to residents of Assam and Meghalaya to prioritise dialogue over aggression in resolving the long-standing interstate boundary dispute. His remarks follow a recent skirmish in the Lapangap area that tragically left one villager from Assam dead. Sangma described the incident as unfortunate and emphasised that the confrontation was entirely between civilians.

He explained that both police forces were actively trying to calm their respective crowds when tensions escalated. “Both the police were restraining their populations to prevent aggression, but as the crowd grew, a scuffle broke out between two groups, resulting in a fatality,” he said, clarifying that the clash was purely public-to-public.

The Chief Minister reiterated the governments’ commitment to peaceful negotiations, noting that phase one of discussions successfully addressed six areas of difference, while six more remain under consideration. He urged residents along the border to cooperate and allow officials to continue dialogue without disruption, stressing that patience and mutual tolerance are essential for a long-term settlement.

Highlighting the structured approach of the ongoing talks, Sangma pointed out that the government is engaging with locals through committees and public hearings, similar to phase one. Acknowledging the complexity of the dispute, which has persisted for over five decades, he reaffirmed his stance: the government aims for resolution through discussion, not force.
