In 1871, the city of Turin got the first horse-drawn tram in Italy, followed by the electrification starting in 1893. The network reached its greatest extent in 1949, and numerous lines were discontinued in the following decades. While the construction of a light rail system failed, a metro line was opened in 2006. Today the tram's track network is 88 kilometers long, although numerous branches are out of service.
In 2023, in addition to low-floor cars of the 5000 (Fiat/Stanga TPR) and 6000 (Fiat Cityway) series, there were also numerous high-floor cars of the 2800 series. These were created between 1958 and 1960 and in 1982 by combining two motorcars from the 1930s. They are to be replaced by the new type 8000 (Hitachi Rail).
