My mother's family settled in Fort Stockton, Texas in the late 1800's. Not long after my grandfather passed away in 1980 I was cleaning out a storeroom at his home and came across several reels of 8mm home movies. Most of the footage captured scenes of Fort Stockton and the surrounding area in the late 1930s.
Unfortunately, much of the film was extremely brittle and couldn’t be salvaged. However, we were able to restore about two hours of footage! As you might expect, the quality is far from perfect—and, of course, there’s no sound—but what remains offers a rare glimpse into our vibrant little community during a time when the nation was on the brink of World War II.
I wanted to share this short video compilation featuring clips from historically significant areas including the James Rooney Park, the Comanche Springs Swimming Pool, and a remarkable video of the 1938 Water Carnival Parade through downtown Fort Stockton.
Enjoy!
