The art of making Kashmiri Namda also known as felted wool floor coverings or rugs, reached Kashmir in the 11th Century during Mughal Era from Iran and Turkey. Namda is made from Sheep’s wool and is typically designed with hand-crafted Aari embroidery. The process involves felting layers of wool where each fold of wool is seamlessly layered without stitching, sprinkled with water and pressed with a tool called Pinjra (woven willow wicker). The water is wringed through compression technique and the namda is left to dry. The craftsmanship of designing each piece with colorful aari needle work is intensive and requires immense patience and skill.
Namda is integral to Kashmiri households to beat the chilly winter and uphold the culture and heritage with grace.
