In 2022 Kara was diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer. "That was the day my life changed forever. When I was diagnosed, the feeling was one of disbelief, an out of body experience."
"Cancer doesn't discriminate. I had the complete opposite lifestyle to the list of things I read that would ‘increase my risk’. I didn’t smoke, I was fit and healthy, I was young – under 40 – when I was diagnosed and yet I still got cancer".
Kara was treated by Mr Shahnawaz Rasheed, a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at The Royal Marsden Private Care. "As soon as I stepped into his office, he put myself and my parents completely at ease."
"For two years of my life, The Royal Marsden felt like home. The level of care was second to none, and I think it's just the culture there, putting the patient first, beyond cancer."
Now, with no evidence of cancer present, she says the experience has changed her outlook on life. Kara is currently studying towards a cancer rehabilitation qualification, and wants to give back, in ways that are meaningful to her.
